Notably, this economic growth is driven not only by expansion in scale but also by positive improvements in production and business activities, attracting foreign investment, and Vietnam’s increasingly competitive position in regional and global supply chains.

However, the economic picture for the first eight months of 2026 also shows some signs that need to be considered and analyzed more cautiously, such as the value of imports increasing faster than exports and the trade balance shifting to a deficit; the tendency for price pressure to increase; while the room for policy management must simultaneously meet two increasingly difficult-to-balance requirements: maintaining high growth rates while ensuring macroeconomic stability and the major balances of the national economy in the medium and long term.

Vietnam’s economic growth prospects for the last four months of 2026 depend not only on maintaining existing growth drivers, but also on the government’s need for feasible policy solutions to create more room for economic development. This should be linked to the efficient disbursement of public investment capital, increased domestic demand, improved capital absorption capacity, and business development. Furthermore, it requires close monitoring of developments, proactive identification of difficulties and challenges, and forecasting of global trade trends in the medium and long term.

Given the continued high and unpredictable levels of geopolitical and international economic uncertainty, the quality of growth, sustainability, and resilience of the national economy will be crucial factors determining the extent to which Vietnam achieves its major economic goals in 2026; and will also contribute to creating a solid foundation and premise for development in 2027.

<iframe loading="lazy" title="PART 1:VIETNAM’S ECONOMY AFTER THE FIRST EIGHT MONTHS OF 2026. Industrial production, import and export activities, attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), tourism, and public investment continued to play a crucial role in growth. The macroeconomic fundamentals remained stable, major balances were maintained, while production and business activities showed clearer signs of improvement in recent months.

According to the Government, the socio-economic situation in August and the first eight months of 2026 continued to develop positively; the macroeconomic situation remained basically stable and major balances were ensured. Notably, state budget revenue in the first eight months reached approximately 2.03 trillion VND, equivalent to 80.2% of the projected figure and an increase of 16.2% compared to the same period in 2025.

Industrial production and manufacturing continue to be important drivers of growth.

One of the outstanding highlights of Vietnam’s economy in the first eight months of 2026 was the improvement in the industrial sector. The Industrial Production Index (IIP) in August increased by 14.4% year-on-year; for the first eight months, the IIP is estimated to have increased by nearly 12%. In particular, the manufacturing industry increased by approximately 12.5%, continuing to play a crucial role in the production and export activities of the economy.

Imports and exports increased sharply, but the trade balance shifted to a trade deficit.

International trade continues to be one of the highlights of Vietnam’s economy. According to the General Statistics Office of the Ministry of Finance, the total value of goods exports and imports in the first eight months of 2026 reached US$770.14 billion, an increase of 28.7% compared to the same period last year and the highest level ever recorded for the same eight-month period.

Of that total, exports reached $374.84 billion, an increase of 22.4%; the processed industrial goods group alone reached $337.99 billion, accounting for 90.2% of total export turnover. The United States continued to be Vietnam’s largest export market with a turnover of approximately $122 billion.

Conversely, imports reached $395.3 billion, a significant increase of 35.3%, considerably higher than the export growth rate. Thus, calculations based on published data show that Vietnam had a trade deficit of approximately $20.46 billion in the first eight months. However, the import structure reveals that 94.1% of the value belonged to the production materials group. This implies that the increase in imports is partly linked to the demand for raw materials, machinery, and inputs to support the expansion of production.

FDI continues to strengthen the productive capacity of the economy.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows are another bright spot. As of August 31, 2026, total registered FDI in Vietnam reached US$40.63 billion, a 55.4% increase compared to the same period last year. Of this, newly registered capital reached US$21.72 billion, a 96.8% increase; and implemented FDI reached US$17.25 billion, a 12% increase and the highest implemented level for the same 8-month period in the last 5 years.

Notably, the processing and manufacturing industry continues to attract the majority of capital flows. FDI implemented in this sector reached US$14.24 billion, equivalent to 82.6% of total FDI implemented. This demonstrates that international capital flows remain closely linked to Vietnam’s production, processing capabilities, and supply chains.

However, in the medium and long term, the crucial issue lies not only in the scale of FDI capital but also in the quality of projects, the technological content, the level of technology transfer, and the ability to create linkages between FDI enterprises and the domestic business sector.

Tourism, public investment, and domestic demand provide further impetus for growth.

The service sector continues to be supported by the recovery of tourism. In the first eight months of 2026, Vietnam welcomed nearly 16 million international visitors, an increase of approximately 14.5% compared to the same period last year. The increase in international visitors not only directly contributes to tourism but also creates a ripple effect on transportation, accommodation, food and beverage, retail, and many related services.

Public investment continues to play a key role in supporting growth. By the end of August, disbursement of public investment capital reached nearly 510 trillion VND, equivalent to 49.8% of the plan. Although the scale of disbursement continues to increase, this rate indicates that there is still relatively large room for disbursement in the last four months of the year. If progress improves, public investment could continue to create a ripple effect on construction, materials, transportation, and private sector investment.

Inflation remains under control, but price pressures need to be monitored.

Alongside the goal of boosting growth, inflationary pressure is becoming a factor that needs closer monitoring. The CPI in August 2026 increased by 0.47% compared to the previous month; the average for the first eight months increased by 4.45% compared to the same period in 2025. Core inflation averaged an increase of 4.24%. Notably, the transportation group increased by 4.09% in August, mainly related to fuel price fluctuations.

The relatively narrow gap between CPI and core inflation suggests that price pressures are not solely driven by short-term fluctuations. With credit growth, public investment, consumption, and production all being boosted, the need to balance supporting growth and controlling inflation will become increasingly important in the final months of the year.

The economy enters the final four months of the year on a positive note, but challenges are increasing.

Overall, the Vietnamese economy after the first eight months of 2026 is being supported by several factors simultaneously: industrial production is growing steadily, the PMI remains above 50 points, international trade is expanding, FDI is increasing significantly, tourism continues to recover, and there is still considerable room for disbursement in public investment.

However, behind these positive results, several issues remain that need attention. Import growth is outpacing export growth; inflationary pressure is showing signs of increasing; the disbursement of public investment still needs to be accelerated; while the Vietnamese economy is highly open and continues to be significantly affected by fluctuations in trade, geopolitics, energy prices, and demand in international markets.

Therefore, the results of the first eight months of the year create a relatively favorable foundation for Vietnam’s economic growth in 2026, but the ability to translate this foundation into sustainable growth will depend on maintaining macroeconomic stability, controlling inflation, promoting production and business, accelerating public investment, and improving the quality of growth drivers in the last four months of the year.

PART 2 — DIFFICULTIES AND CHALLENGES IN THE LAST FOUR MONTHS OF 2026 AND 2027.

(Mr. Phung Xuan Minh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Phat Thinh Group & Saigon Ratings).
